Qualitative Anion Tests Essay - 1330 Words
Exercise 14: Qualitative Anion Tests PURPOSE: The purpose of this experiment is to identify some commonly occurring anions to study some of the reactions used for their identification. PROCEDURE: You must first determine to which of the three groups the various anions belong. Since no two people observe the same event in exactly the same way it is important to also conduct specific confirmation tests on the known samples of each anion. This information will help identify the anion present in the unknown solution. After determining to which group the unknown solution belongs the specific confirmation test will enable you to conclusively identify which anion is present in the unknown solution. 1. Before beginning, setâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦If the paper turns black (caused by PbS) this indicates the presence of sulfide. Thoroughly clean and dry the test tubes before beginning tests on the next solution. Cleanup: Tightly cap the bottle of silver nitrate solution and put it in the Experiment 11 bag so it will be easy to find when you need it for the next experiment. Flush any other remaining solutions down the drain with lots of water. Properly rinse all equipment used, then dry and store for future use. To figure out the cations, many tests and observations were needed to be made. With the gathered flame test results, and the information given in the procedure, conclusions could be made. Solution A is Sr2+ since it tested crimson red. Solution C is Ba2+ because it tested green. Solution D is Li+ because it turned the flame carmine red. Finally, solution G is Na+ because the flame had an intense colour of orange-yellow. The other ions did not give any specific flame test colour. Your lab report must contain the following information: Experimental data may be collected with other students in introductory chemistry labs. However, I understand that sharing information required for a lab report or unknown submission (including but not limited to word processing or spreadsheet files, calculations, graphs, conclusions and additionalRead MoreThe Separation And Identification Of A Series Of Cations Essay1346 Words à |à 6 PagesThe Separation and Identification of a Series of Cations Ethan Northcutt BB2 November 2nd, 2016 Abstract Ten cations were reacted with eleven anions and the results of the reactions were recorded; the reactions were performed so that the results could be used in the qualitative analysis of an unknown mixture containing a combination of the same ten cations. There are some distinct differences between the reactions that occurred and the reactions that were predicted to occur. The discrepanciesRead MoreEssay about Qualitative Analysis Discussion856 Words à |à 4 PagesDISCUSSION: Qualitative analysis is used to determine the presence of cations or anions present within a sample and their impurities. Information known, such as chemical and physical properties, about cations and anions can be used to determine what steps should be used to separate the sample into one, specific ion. Qualitative analysis involves forming and decomposing complex ions. Qualitative tests are very sensitive, allowing to detect a very small amount present in sample. Due to sensitivityRead MoreAcid And Bases Lab Project 71620 Words à |à 7 Pagessolved in this study deals with analyzing unknown solutions. In this particular case, a chemical company has several unknown solutions and to correctly dispose of them they need to know their properties. To figure out the properties several qualitative tests were performed throughout the study (Cooper 2012). To start out this study the difference between acids and bases has to be identified. Acids have very low pHs and have a high concentration of hydronium ions, while bases have a high pH and haveRead MoreSleuth your slurry2119 Words à |à 9 Pagesidentification of that substance is revealed through a seires of tests that involve chemical and physical properties of that substance. Problem: You are given an unknown chemical substance that you need to be able to identify. How are you going to do this? The compound can be either harmful or toxic, so what you need to do is test all of its physical and chemical properties, and then find out the synthesis of the substance. Qualitative testing and quantitative testing is essential in discoveringRead MoreUsing A Standard Solution Of Potassium Manganate1297 Words à |à 6 Pagesachieve a precise result. With this method being a good quantitative test it provided us with accurate results and I believe this is down to the equipment and timings as they were precise. The only reason why I would improve the method and experiment is so that I could get even better and even more accurate results with a higher level of precision.
